Today is Blog Action Day, an annual event (in its second year) where bloggers post about the same issue on the same day to “raise awareness and trigger global discussion.” Exactly a year ago, bloggers united to bring the environment to the web’s attention. I wrote about greenmail, my friend Kim’s green-tip-filled e-mails (which she’s still doing). This year the topic is Poverty.

We are allowed to interpret the theme as we see fit, which could have been a bit of a daunting task. However, I was excited that a thought immediately popped into mind about what I should write. Last night while watching CNN election coverage (which is pretty standard these evenings), I noticed a promotion to Vote for the CNN Hero of 2008. It gave a quick look at a few of the nominees, one of whom caught my full attention.

It was Anne Malhum, the founder of Back on My Feet–”a non-profit organization that promotes self-sufficiency of Philadelphia’s homeless population by engaging them in running as a means to build confidence, strength and self-esteem.” (I’m sure great care was taken in crafting that mission statement, so wanted to use her words.) Anne would pass a homeless shelter every morning on her daily run, and one day an idea stopped her in her tracks. What started as one small running club has become so much more (at 5 shelters in just 15 months) without losing its core principles of discipline (that running can show you what your capable of) and community (that life’s a lot easier when you don’t go at it alone). She doesn’t provide food or shelter, rather shoes, structure and support to the homeless. And she provides inspiration for all of us.

What a great coincidence that I saw this last night. Read more about her great story here.

Brands have grown up using content to communicate.
But do we really need more content? Or are we tense enough as it is?
Perhaps there are other things brands could do, rather than adding to the ever-expanding infinity, to be entertaining or useful. To earn some attention.
Someone has to help alleviate all this tension.
Could the future of brands be in collation, curation, aggregation, dissemination, navigation, catalysation (insert other words that end in -ation of your choice here) – rather than traditional creation?

Greetings, Kind Sirs,

Have you ever blacked out on Irish Car Bombs? Been thrown out of a bar before the sun went down? Watched yourself get visibly fatter while taking down two Double Quarter Pounders at McDonald’s? Gotten scolded by a stewardess for being an intoxicated loudmouth? Indulged too heavily on a soiree’s delicious finger food and subsequently nuked the bathroom? Tried to drunkenly save face with a girl that rejected you by saying, “I don’t need any new friends?” Been too drunk and too broke to pay for your cab? Argued with your bank because surely they have your balance wrong? Spent the morning watching after-school HIV prevention films at a free AIDS clinic? Had your girlfriend’s niece ask you why your stomach is so much bigger than everyone else’s at a family function? Have you ever recounted one or all of these stories in lurid detail to your buddies over Instant Messenger?

If you answered “yes” or better yet “indeed,” then, you, sir, are a gentleman, and we, the dastardly webmasters at TheFoggyMonocle would like to salute you.

Interview with one of the founders (the one on your right) to come soon…now.

3:18 PM me: could i email you 3-5 questions about it
interview style – and i’ll post the answers
3:19 PM James: yeah totally
or we could do it as an IM interview to fit in with the theme
3:20 PM me: nice idea…how did you decide to create this site?
James: we always talked about having a blog together and the gentleman joke is recurring for us whenever we behave badly and i had a backlog of all these funny IMs/Emails recounting bad behavior
so i figured my friends would too
i hope it catches on
3:22 PM me: how did you decide to call it “the foggy monocle”?
3:24 PM James: All gentleman require a monocle — it’s old-timey and it also aids your eagle eye in spotting various opportunities. After a long night out full of much drinking and carrying on it often gets foggy, and so you IM and your email your buddies to get the full story on what went down the previous evening and hence de-fog (is that word?) your monocle.
3:26 PM me: if it’s not it can be soon. what must a gentleman never do?
and the converse, from what must he never abstain?
3:29 PM James: A gentleman never second guesses his decisions. He lives in the moment and goes head in to any situation, no matter how big of a dumbass he’ll inevitably make of himself or how much he’ll hurt in the morning.
3:32 PM me: where is the best place to get a monocle?
3:33 PM James: The monocle store. But be warned, lines are often long, so if you have an engagement planned with a lady, you might want to stop by well in advance so as not to arrive tardy.
3:36 PM me: ha. i had no idea how you’d respond. good stuff. and one final question: any night-spot recommendations for the monocle-wearing gentleman in nyc?
3:38 PM James: discussing with Dane
3:44 PM Erik: A gentleman will adapt to his surroundings and become comfortable wherever he is, given that there is appropriate amounts of liquor and women on the premises. Be it a club or a dive bar. Occasionally though, the best company is found in the later. But the most important part of the equation is the liquor. A true gentleman must first have half a dozen shooters before talking to a lady.

The end. Now go visit.

Probably (read as: definitely) an inappropriate title for the spirit of this post, but I couldn’t help myself. There’s no rule that says do-goodery can’t be coupled with a little silliness (maybe there should be), and I wanted to inflect my voice into the setup of this post since I’m going simple to copy and paste an email from a friend—and fellow strategist—below. As he acknowledges, you likely get a lot of RFD’s (Requests for Donation) but I’d rather hear about them (especially the personal ones) and help if I can (and connect) or just be inspired by the people making a difference. It’s not easy to ask for help (especially monetary), but those who do not ask…you know the rest. Here’s Alain’s e-mail:

An Orphanage in Haiti

If you’re anything like me you’re bored of hearing pleas for help. Well, I’m sorry to say that herein lies one.

In this case it’s something much closer to home. Quite literally actually. The house my mother was raised in, in Port-au-Prince Haiti, has been converted into an orphanage called Enfant Haïtien Mon Frère. My 81 year old grand-uncle has run the entire operation for the past 40 years and helps place kids with families — either safely at home in Haiti or somewhere else abroad.

But here’s the thing. These kids have come from the worst situations imaginable. Some come from extreme poverty, others have fatal diseases like HIV, and others are literally found abandoned in the streets. As you would suspect, Haiti is no home for kids in need.

My brothers, my dad, and I are all going to Haiti in early April. Partly to visit family and the country. And partly to bring some form of help to the orphanage.

So that’s what this is: a simple ask to donate money or stuff to this little Haitian orphanage.

The truth is that money is only one way to help. And often times it’s a tricky thing to ask for. So if there’s anything you can donate (ie, clothes, toiletries, toys, etc.) please do so. Just contact me, keeping in mind that I literally will be delivering things by hand. (My office actually has donated some computers, so that’s cool.)

Please feel free to pass this along. Thanks for even considering this and sorry to bombard email.
Alain

How to send money electronically?
PayPal is the safest and easiest way to send money.
Send whatever you can to alain@sylvain.com.

He lists some other things to send (i.e. children books in French) and his address, but I figured I’d keep that private. If that type of donation appeals to you, leave a comment or shoot him an e-mail. Thanks all.

I know, I know. It doesn’t work so well. But I had to acknowledge that since it’s early Thursday morning, I didn’t really help anyone get over the hump via actions.

I did, however, check out Behance’s new site, which I know Michael’s been working on a ton since he moved here to NYC. And that ton he says, “is like the recorded time of Earth vs. our planet’s creation!” Holla at me/Get in my inner circle if you’re on the site and let’s make some ideas happen. For real. They have a great mission and great methods (in addition to their action pads as MK points out) to help you achieve productive creativity. Doing.

Also the TED conference has kicked off today, and if you like me didn’t have the 6000 beans to pony up I encourage you to check out the blog of W+K’s Global Director of Digital Strategies for updates. He talks about how using a crowdsourcing tool (Kluster), they are trying to develop a product over the course of TED (a single 72 hour period). Cool.

Goodnight.

He’s a dude I’ve talked about before (and thanked) as the founder of Fallon’s planning blog (he is AKI SYSTEMS 2600), a web-maven (who put me onto netvibes and many a YouTube video), a mentor and friend in MN (and still). So of course I was planning on interviewing him at some point in the future but when I realized it was already Wednesday (that 3-day weekend fooled me)—and another week was in danger of passing without featuring someone who has personally inspired me to stop talking about it and be about it—I hollered at Aki. And unsurprisingly, I found him doing something new.

I caught him on his Yahoo! Live Channel (which I encourage you to check out), and I got him chatting for 40 minutes (as you can see by the time-stamps below). Unfortunately there’s no way record a video conversation, so we kicked it old school and IMed with our live images up on screen. As you’ll see, he didn’t even need my “questions” (I’m still learning how to interview); rather, he just riffed some great stuff off the dome. And I’ve got it here for you to feast on…

What’s your philosophy when it comes to doing?
[ 4:30] akispicer I’ll quote yoda: “Do. Or do not. There is no try.”
[ 4:30] akispicer Can’t think this stuff to paralysis.
[ 4:31] akispicer Fast to beta…stick and move. And honestly, I dunno if the agency/client pace can afford that kind of speed.

What’s on the web have you been interested in lately?
[ 4:32] akispicer Lately? It can shift every week, I have a short attention span with web toys.
[ 4:32] akispicer This for sure. (POST INTERVIEW INSERT: HE’S TALKING ABOUT YAHOO!
What have you been doing outside of Fallon?
[ 4:37] akispicer Outside Fallon…Planning For Good.
[ 4:37] akispicer 1500 of the brightest minds in advertising want to collaborate with good causes and make a difference.
[ 4:38] akispicer Ed Cotton has been taking the lead…others of us chip in
[ 4:38] akispicer I am trying to harness the same model for local solutions.
[ 4:39] akispicer We’ve been learning alot about actually DOING what we push in all our decks to clients.

How do you not get overwhelmed by all the new online technologies (“toys”)?
[ 4:45] akispicer It can take a long minute to check emails, check RSS feeds, click on “time waster” links I get IM’d…

How do you make that minute matter (everything you put into del.icio.us, and on the blog, and that you read)?
[ 4:46] akispicer I definitely notice my attention span shortening…but I try to provide value to clients and others thru
[ 4:46] akispicer client blog posting, trends presentations, and day-to-day strategy decks
[ 4:47] akispicer The time suck pays back when you have to deliver an answer to a complex problem and you have all the refs
[ 4:47] akispicer ready.
[ 4:47] akispicer More of my time is being spent with FILING AND LIBRARY RECALL SYSTEMS
[ 4:47] akispicer tagging, using consistent names and redistributing info to parties that could use it
[ 4:48] akispicer Facebook and blogs serve as a broadcast system so that I don’t have to find the people in my networks, I just
[ 4:48] akispicer have to order and organize for their digestion. Its all about connecting the dots for others.
[ 4:49] akispicer My main issue with newspapers, magazines and TV is that I cannot tag and file and forward insightful info.

How does all this impact your role as a planner (POST INTERVIEW INSERT: Planning Director)?
[ 4:50] akispicer I see my role here and with clients as a reporter, or guide.
[ 4:51] akispicer I like immersing myself into these nets and coming back to “report”
[ 4:51] akispicer Clients and agencies are intimidated by these technologies…and often, they just need a Virgil to guide them
[ 4:52] akispicer I like the process of experimentation and synthesis – simplifying it into language that is universal, really.

So everyone gets up to speed and things don’t get lost in translation (like from acct to creative or marketing to operations)?
[ 4:57] akispicer Well, I think social computing holds the potential to get back to communicating, actually.
[ 4:57] akispicer Take today with Y! Live…the designer hit me up on my channel and we chatted.
[ 4:58] akispicer He answered my questions, he asked me a few.
[ 4:58] akispicer When is the last time the head of a major brand “communicated” directly with a customer/user/prospect/person?
[ 4:59] akispicer Social computing FORCES brands and creators to get out here and talk. It is forcing politicians to do the same
[ 5:00] akispicer It is forcing agencies to learn a new approach…
[ 5:00] akispicer Yeah, I think you and I and many others are digital natives so it is not so awkward to imagine getting on our
[ 5:01] akispicer websites and blogs and talking back. Or risking questions from open web.

Risking?
[ 5:02] akispicer We are a bit more improvisational and free form…that is considered a “risk” by most clientele and brands and
[ 5:02] akispicer politicians.
[ 5:03] akispicer Most brands could never do what Y! Live just did, which is open up the windows and let me and you peek behind
[ 5:03] akispicer the curtain and just hold a one-to-one conversation.
[ 5:03] akispicer And that simple tactic makes me a believer and evangelist…

What other brands are bringing people in like this?
[ 5:05] akispicer Much of the innovation is happening out here, amongst people, not necessarily among the big brands.
[ 5:06] akispicer I liked Virgin America’s recent appeal to the masses to get the DOT to greenlight VA to fly.

And what about Brainfood? That seems like an example of you putting it (all) out there for people (including the competition) to see.
[ 5:10] akispicer I have a fundamental issue with hiding information.
[ 5:11] akispicer We all do so much research and info gathering…only to present to 6 people and store/hide the insights away.
[ 5:11] akispicer Brainfood is really about making what we do open and present before the whole agency.
[ 5:12] akispicer Its also about getting creativity and ideas out of the ghetto of “creative departments”.
[ 5:12] akispicer Everyone at the agency contributes. Everyone is important. Let’s share ideas together. And eat free lunch, too
[ 5:13] akispicer I have found that agencies are packed with pockets of innovators in the interactive basements, in the
[ 5:13] akispicer coordinator desks, in the production offices.
[ 5:14] akispicer And these pockets of energy and passion and insight often go untapped
[ 5:15] akispicer So I view my role as trying to source and direct these pockets to make sparks happen.

Hopefully you all will agree, this seemed like a perfect way to end. Thanks Aki. See you soon…without any travel!

I should have saved Sherlock for Do Day, but since I didn’t and I’ve been running around in the rain all day, I’m going to cop out a bit and pass along what I think are pretty strong spots our London office recently did for Honda.

Actually, as I was thinking about commercials that explicitly talk about “doing” (vs. commercials with a strong call to action), I couldn’t help but think about IBM’s recent campaign. So I went to find the latest spot I’ve seen called “Avatar,” which you can see here:

As much as I can’t help but take it personally that this is how most adult businesspeople view young professionals and our Web two dot zero ideas, I do admire that IBM (and agency) seems to really know its target. But as I looked for this video (and found a few that had been removed from YouTube), I also came across an interesting article on CNET showing IBM’s chief executive, Sam Palmisano in Second Life. In fact, it seems he has two avatars.

I read from an article that’s a little more than a year ago, “IBM foresees a sizable business in providing the software, computers, and chips that power 3-D worlds, and in advising clients on how to take advantage of them to market or sell products.” Now, either they are changing strategies (and beliefs). Or the point of the spot was to say that IBM can help you get more out of these virtual world opportunities. If it’s the latter, I have to say that message didn’t quite come through. Oh yeah, and young people explore, try, fail, learn fast, etc. etc. In short, we do!

I read a scary post a couple of days ago on John Grant’s Greenormal blog. It has (like many others) been on my mind since. Also, like these “others” (not in the Lost sense of the term) I’ve offered to help. So the first thing I figured I’d do was pass on the link above.

As John says in his comments he’s going about doing something by first working to create a concise, clear, and compelling video and then when it’s ready, use it to spread the word. I will, of course, pass that on. In the meantime, I have been be considering another one of his comments as well as a recent article by Seth Godin.

Other SG’s post, “Fear, hope, and love: the three marketing levers”. He talks about these three emotions as the primary reasons (individually) that people take action. JG commented, “…but i do know that from academic studies in memetics (ideas that spread like viruses) bad news always spreads faster than good. In the past I have looked at case studies like the Y2K bug.”

So it seems like Fear is going to be the lever we’re pulling for this message in order to get the word out quickly. This makes sense to me. But I wonder if there’s a way to flip the Love switch soon after. And I wonder if an Obama win in November could impact the decision on which lever becomes most effective (vs. McCain, let’s stick with fear or if Hillary could get Gore in the Cabinet). I wonder if fear made An Inconvenient Truth such a hit. And I wonder if fear was the best way to convince people to make the small changes laid out at the end. It seems the type of action we’re asking people to take would impact the approach (lever).

I couldn’t help but think on my way into work today that a problem of this magnitude would need to tons of optimism and love. I think uniting, organizing, and calling my generation to action (and those younger) requires it. We won’t be shocked or scared into making the major changes this necessitates. We’ll, as Seth said, “aim for love.” If the meetings we had for Live Earth at Planning for Good in New York are any indication, we’re looking for our cause (should have found it by now). I’m really interested to hear the specific feedback from Live Earth about all suggestions as well as to know how other city teams tackled the issue. My feeling is we’re ready to be heroes because we love this planet.

Note: Ed has already offered his (and the group’s) assistance, which is great. Any ideas are appreciated.

I’ve never been particularly inclined to write about politics on my blog. There are lots of people (including my friend Jake) that are more knowledgeable about the subject. There a lots of blogs and magazines and shows that are devoted to it. Plus, frankly, I never really cared very much other than to solidify my views on social issues and hate on George W. But that has changed. Now I run home to watch Super Tuesday coverage, not the Georgetown basketball game. (Granted, we were playing South Florida.) I fall asleep to replayed candidate speeches on CSPAN not Scrubs reruns. I seek out more information on their sites and more content on YouTube. I anxiously await the next debate.

And I don’t give dissatisfaction with Bush the credit for this spike in and sustained interest. I was pretty angry in ‘04 as well. I’m excited by the fact that we have a serious female candidate (more so than when we had a Jew as a VP on the ticket) and the prospect of our first woman President. I even like her. However, while she represents a change in leadership (policy and proof that we’ve grown as a nation), she still represents what I find uninteresting and uninspiring about politics. If she and Edwards were the two Democratic candidates left last night, I would have felt a “win” for one vs. the other more critical. Yet I can tell you with certainty, if I watched at all (unlikely) I would not have watched with enthusiasm, with eager anticipation…the way I did last night.

Barack Obama makes me passionate about politics. (Yes, I found myself researching the process of awarding delegates last night.) He makes me believe things can be different. And most importantly, makes me and others feel they must do something. He inspires action (which is what Do Day is all about). I stayed up to watch his speech last night, and something he said hit such a nerve that I got out of bed to find a pen and write it down:

We are the ones we’ve been waiting for.

I could not think of a better way to kick off the “Do Day” profile series than with an interview with Jen Giroux. Running has been top of mind recently for me with recent resolutions (“run more” – I keep ‘em pretty simple) and the purchase of my Nike +. But more than that device or even looking at pictures of my marathon-ready self from September 2006, Jen provides the motivation I need to get out there and run! I love receiving her update emails, and upon receipt of the last I asked if I could feature her here. Thankfully she agreed and the rest, as they say, is below…

In July of 2006, Jen decided to run a marathon in memory of her friend, Steven Bouvier (Bouv), who was lost to lymphoma in 2005 at the age of 29. She had never run more than “maybe three miles…with walk breaks,” let alone a marathon. But on January 14, 2007, she ran her first marathon and raised OVER $10,000 for The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society with Team In Training to help fight against blood cancers.

She didn’t stop there. In June 2007, she ran her second marathon in San Diego, mentoring others and helping in their fundraising efforts. And Jen is now training for her third marathon…in Paris! Oui, it’s true. She once again has ambitious goals: 1. to raise $20,000 and 2. to cut 20 minutes off her time. If anyone can do it, Jen can—and that’s why I had to ask her a few questions.

But before I get into that, I urge you to take a look at her running blog, which gives an inside (and fun) look at her past and present training/fund raising, and if you feel compelled, DONATE.

(Note: Rather than “bold” the questions, I used it to highlight some points that I found particularly interesting/insightful. Let me know if you’re not feeling that move. And also, since this is my first time doing one of these blog interviews you may find the questions random or lame or something else not good. Feel free to leave a constructive criticism in the comments as well. It’s a learning process, and thanks Jen for bearing with me!) Okay, now here we go.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://bp1.blogger.com/_5PKRnjgWo3I/R5dskHVg5SI/AAAAAAAAA1U/yjPz6FRo8Z8/s200/jen.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5158711265876567330" />
—What was your first step (no pun intended) in transforming idea into action?
I guess the first thing for me was research (as boring as that sounds). I got the itch to “do something good”, and I knew I wanted to do something for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, because my friend died as a result of Hodgkin’s. So for me, it ended up being really easy because as soon as I searched the LLS + charity events, I learned about Team in Training. I signed up for an info session intending to participate in a bike ride, and by the end of the session I found myself signing up for a marathon. I remember my friend asking “Aren’t you even going to think about it?” and I answered “If I think about it, I’m going to talk myself out of it” and passed in my paperwork. Thus the running & fundraising madness began.

—Where is your favorite place to run in NYC?
The upper loop of central park in the evening.

—What is the most surprising thing that happened since you’ve been running for a cause?
I think the overwhelming support of both people I know and complete strangers. I would say am not an overly or overtly emotional person, but I would often find myself misty-eyed over a lot of the emails I would get back from people.

Also the impact of a lot of people doing a little – of the $10,000 or so I raised, there were no donations over $200. That was really special to me – how many people had taken the time and effort to be involved.

Finally, that I’m now running my third marathon. I used to hate running and now, well, it still doesn’t come easy, but its something I really enjoy. Oops, that’s three things, isn’t it.

—Totally fine. What’s the song that keeps you going (during running and/or off)?
Sunday Bloody Sunday. It makes me think of bigger things than how much my feet/legs hurt.

—How do you find the time to train, fund raise, do it all?
Honestly, sometimes I’m not sure. I think you have to make the time for things that mean a lot to you, especially living in NYC where there’s always a million things to do. I try to do my solo runs in the morning because that’s really the only way that I can truly assure they get done. Fundraising and blogging happens after hours since I’m a bit of a night owl. I actually do a lot of the thinking about what’s going to be in my emails and other ideas while I’m running. I probably pay the biggest price in sleep.

—How did you decide on this years fund raising goal? Last year’s?
Last year I initially was only going for five. After my first letter I think I raised almost $3,000 and I decided, what the hell, I’ve got 6 more months, let’s go for double digits. As far as this year, I kind of just pulled it out of the air. I probably would have been more prudent sticking with the same or maybe going for $15,000, but I don’t feel like I have anything to lose by aiming high (except for maybe a little blow to my ego). This year is going to be more challenging because people know that I can actually run a marathon so I think that effects the fundraising. But, I’m planning on some other things – more outreach to my hometown local organizations, a few events, and a more organized E-bay bum auction.

—What is the key to maintaining momentum?
Setting up a plan/calendar for whatever you’re doing helps immensely. I send updates roughly every 3-4 weeks or around training and fundraising milestones like big races. If you give yourself little deadlines, it makes it less likely that you’ll find yourself waiting until the last minute.

Also, I really really try to keep my blog enjoyable/fun to read, and not completely focused on “give me your money!” (although that is of course is the end goal). Most of the people I’m writing to are probably never going to run a marathon or similar so I really try to write about things that are inspiring, exciting, frustrating – a genuine account of my experience doing this. Then I hope that people find the stories interesting. I think when that happens, people are more than happy to contribute.

—What do you credit most for your success?
There’s a lot of little things – a self-depreciating sense of humor, a broad email list full of good people, a great charity all have something to do with it. But I’d give the most credit to doing something I’m very passionate about and really believe in. Even though all this began because of something of very sad and painful, the “ripple effect” of good things and how many people have been touched as a result…all the people donating, and reading the blog, helping other people fund raise, makes me very proud. Being the catalyst for all that was something I could personally could do to (for lack of a better term) honor our friendship and helped me deal with Bouv’s death in the best possible way I could.

And where ever he is, I’m sure he gets a good laugh at the sight of me out running every Saturday morning. I usually do.

—Can’t follow that up with anything except, thanks so much Jen!

I’m still working on getting this going and I don’t want to put up any half-assed conversations up there and pawn them off as interviews because it’s not fair to the doers or you readers. Neither are run-on sentences.

One thing I came across in this category last week was an image posted by Russell Davies. I found it profound and applicable to the ad industry (which I’m sure is why he put it up on his blog in the first place). I believe the next set of planners are going to be more like producers. I believe a lot of them already are. I believe it’s something I want to become more like. Like seriously! (Please send me to Africa, MTV.)

So with that said, I know this is weak but I wanted to get in the habit of doing this weekly post. I’m a huge believer in the importance of gaining momentum in getting things done (and done better). Just think about any new business pitch in which you’ve been involved. How incredible are some of the things you create in a matter of weeks? How incredible would it be if you could build and sustain that energy in your office every day? (And let people go home and sleep.)

Lastly, in an attempt to hold myself to doing, I’m pledging to set up my Nike + and go for a run by the end of the week. Hollister.

He’s a lot like the boy-hero in the 1953 musical The 5,000 Fingers of Dr. T.—the only feature film written by Dr. Seuss, and one of Gondry’s favorite movies. In it, an evil piano teacher forces 500 children to practice at a gigantic piano 24 hours a day. One boy devises a technique to escape the nightmare. ‘The boy and his friend get a pot,’ recounts Gondry, ‘and start to mix everything they can in it. They take a little bone, a little rope, a key, and mix and mix until it becomes gooey and starts to smoke. Finally, they invent this machine that steals sound. I think this way. Just make things and it’s going to work. I’ll make it work.’

-Jennifer Hillner with Michel Gondry
(Read the rest of the Wired article here)

In 2007, I was really inspired by other bloggers’ (now friends’) ability to as my current agency’s marquee client would say: “Just Do It.” From Clay’s making a ton of stuff (including a ping pong paddle for me!) to Noah’s multiple hit sites in a single day to Michael’s conference and non-profit organization, I’ve gained a lot of insight into the process of creating and, importantly, a lot of motivation to start making things myself. (As this blog is as much a diary and self-promoting tool as anything else, you can be sure you’ll be hearing more about the things I create in 2008 – yes more rhyming!!!)

Seriously though, I’m constantly trying to figure out what this blog actually is, so I can then better figure out what I want it to be. The only expertise I claim is all things Me (in fact, my what’s in a name post is one of my most viewed) and maybe an out-shoot from that in immaturity. But in an effort to expand my horizons by focusing (I think this is what I’m doing), I have indulged another passion of mine. No, not rhyming, but you’re close… Creating catch phrases. (Note: I’m calling them catch whether they catch on or not – see bevistated.)

So from this day forth (assuming I remember) Wednesday on El Gaffney will be “Do Day”. The quote above is my first attempt, but I’m not exactly sure what Do Day will entail. I’m thinking I will interview (I use this term very loosely) someone of these Gen GuYs (on the left sidebar) about all sorts of stuff, and I’ll interview some others about Gen GuYs and other sorts of stuff.

I don’t want to make it too prescriptive since I already have such a strong commitment to the IOI. (Yes, I realize what “comes out” when you pronounce this new term for Wednesday really fast.) And I don’t want to force it either because as I learned on a Chappelle’s Show look back at an interview Dave did about civil rights “people don’t like to be forced.” (Dave’s commentary: “Oh, you mean like slavery forced.”) Anyone remember that episode? Anyone else miss that show regularly still?

Anyway, we’ll see how Do Day works out and how I gets along without all the humping.

Over a month and five or so worksessions/rehearsals later, I’m less than 4 days away from performing my original piece for Birthright Israel Monologues. You can read about my feelings before my first meeting here. I thought then that I would document this experience but after that first meeting, I knew I wouldn’t. Not because it was secret, but because it became a very personal experience for me. No, not a religious experience, nor a transformational one. Just a very personal one for me and the rest of the people in the show. I didn’t want to feel the urge to write about them, their words, or their growth. I didn’t want to give anything away either. But now, in the final days (and now that I’ve finally completed my monologue) I thought I’d share something from night one.

We spent the greater part of an hour doing a timed writing exercise. This is a fairly common way to practice I believe but she referenced this book called Writing Down the Bones by Natalie Goldberg as a good intro for us. Back to the exercise: pretty simple, she would say a phrase, ask a question, play a song, show us a picture, etc. and we had to write what comes into our minds. The only rules were keep your hand moving and on the page, don’t cross out (or worry about spelling, grammar, punctuation), and don’t think to hard (or worry about making sense).

Honestly, it doesn’t sound too unique or amazing, but at the end of the however long (40 minutes I’d guess) I felt incredibly rewarded. Not because what I wrote was so poignant, rather because liberating thoughts from my mind, giving them life on paper was something I hadn’t done in a while. I should clarify that it’s a certain type of thoughts—about Judaism/Jewish stuff mostly—; however, writing was a completely creative endeavor without any purpose other than to get comfortable writing. Still with a deadline (each new question she asked) but not a typical schedule deadline like sending the pov to a client for example.

Rather than use that train of thought to go into how I think this type of exercise would be appropriate for certain types of qual, I’ll show you the first thing I wrote. (The whole point of this post was to pass on the date/time for my performance by the way.) It was my answer to “Do you have any Jewish memorabilia, like jewelry, an accessory, or even a t-shirt?”

Should I raise my hand – the first thing that comes to mind is that cheesy Urban Outfitters t-shirt. The one that I wore in public only once. Not for fear of religious persecution. But scarred shitless, as I should have been) of the fashion police. Yes, you know what I’m talking about by now – “Everyone Loves A Jewish Boy.” Fuck. That wasn’t therapeutic like I thought it would be. It was straight up embarrassing. Whatever. It sucks and I feel like a loser every time I pay to put it in a washing machine. Well, at least it’s comfortable.

Re-writing it now (I suck at using the scanner in my office. Plus I don’t trust it not to be found by anyone else.) is weird, especially since I think that “straight up embarrassing” line made me sound like Kenny from Can’t Hardly Wait. Either way, I wrote a couple pages that night on everything from a freestyle group my friends Craig, Vaz, and me loosely created (meaning we’d break it down drunk at house parties or leaving bars our first year out of college) to female IDF soldiers to JAPS.

Onto the reason for the post, I’ve written something else for this Monday, November 5th at 7PM (doors opening) at The Slipper Room – 167 Orchard Street (Corner of Orchard and Stanton Streets). I think you’re supposed to email alumni@birthrightisrael.com to get on the list. There’s also a show on the 19th of November, which I’ll probably be more prepared for :) if you this is too short notice. Last night was the first night I saw everyone do their pieces and they are really different and really great, so as much as I don’t think it would be the worst thing if no one I knew came, I do encourage you to try your best to make one of the shows.

Update: Ruvym agrees and offers his own encouragement. He’s opening the show, and he’s really awesome, so definitely be on time!
