But he’s given a run for his money by this lady, who emails her company a photo-story using dry erase board, quitting and exposing her Farmville-playing boss.

Or feliz ano nuevo, if only I could figure out how to do get that tilde over the n. Anyone know the shortcut in Wordpress? I probably have to get some “plugin” for a Spanish dictionary or something. I’ve got friends who know how to code and others learning code as part of their New Year’s resolution, and I’m trying to put a squiggly line over a letter. Oh boy. Ah, how about if copy it from the Internet? Oh snap…

Feliz año nuevo! (I’m not going back for an upside-down exclamation point. Sorry.)

But that’s not what this post is about. Well, it kind of is. I have been inspired by some blogging buddies to put some of my resolutions out there for critique, improvement, encouragement and/or to give others ideas since that’s what they’ve given me. Pay it forward. Man, that’s an emotional movie. Haley Joel Osment. Kevin Spacey. Helen Hunt and JBJ (as her alcoholic ex-husband).

Anyway, it’s great to be back from this…

Palmas del Mar, Puerto Rico

Seriously, though, I’m feeling re-energized both professionally and personally and am excited for 2010. (I’m going with twenty-ten, by the way.) And, as I mentioned, have decided to post five resolutions that have been floating around my mind over the last couple of weeks.

1. Blog Once A Week – First things first, I poppa freaks all the blogging. Okay, stream of consciousness may be part of it (as you may have noticed reading up to this point), though I plan on censoring myself a bit to make sure I’m coherent and my posts are fun to read (or at least tolerable). Long story short, this blog is approaching it’s fourth b-day and I’ve never really had a plan for it nor have I forced myself to post on a weekly (even monthly basis). I’m pretty sure I need a full post to outline the first point, but I can confidently say I need to post more. I enjoy writing and sharing (thoughts, not food or toys). So here’s the start.

2. Get Five Mentors – Michael K. is definitely responsible for this one. He surrounds himself with smart people with diverse experiences and seems to be constantly tapping their brains. He is, and his plans are, better for it. Right, Mike? I’ve had the fortune of meeting and working with some incredible people at this point in my life and have lost touch with too many. I need to identify and reach out to a handful of them as well as (hopefully) reconnect and start conversing with them more regularly.

3. Wake Up Early to Work Out Twice A Week – Thanks go out to Kevin for this one. He’s trying to run a 5K and become an early riser. For years I’ve talked about working out in the mornings because (1) I sleep pretty late as it is, and (2) It’s hard to motivated to get to the gym after a long day of work. It hasn’t happened. So this year I’ve got even less excuses. I’ve got a partner (my girlfriend) and a gym/pool in my building. Tuesday’s yoga. Thursday’s swimming. Tomorrow is the first test.

4. Develop Three Skills – This is a work in progress as I cull a bunch of my initial thoughts into a shortlist. It can be learning to do something completely new (e.g., boxing or cooking) or growing/reviving a current (stagnant) ability (e.g., Spanish or dancing). (Yes, dancing.) If anyone has any suggestions in NYC for any of the four listed, I’m all ears.

5. Get Better at Managing Money – This is a big and scary one. And that’s why I didn’t put it into the “skills” list and give myself an out. I hate thinking about and talking about money. But I’ve reached a point in my life where my hate (and guilt) for disliking (being overwhelmed by) money has surpassed the hate of money. It’s debilitating. I’ve realized I need to take control of my personal finances ASAP. (Don’t worry I’m not in any financial trouble.) This is something I’m thinking about sharing what I learn (about everything from saving to investing) or creating a business around.

I finished with a less tangible one and want to add one more to the mix. It is to meet more bloggers in-person. A couple years ago, I was more committed to meeting online acquaintances offline and want to challenge myself to do step that up this year – even if it’s reconnecting with blogging friends. So please stop by and say hi. All the best in this new year.

He tipped me off to Drake’s “Forever” video with Lebron James and a Freestyle Cypher with Mos Def, Black Thought and Eminem.

But the one that really “hits home” is Jay-Z’s “Empire State of Mind” (embedded below). Great storytelling, which, as this post from Desedo shows, has the potential to be even richer and more interactive. (Especially if we can select Alicia Keys as the GPS navigator’s voice.)

I just read an interesting post over at Thought Gadgets, which talks about the importance of putting individuals at the front of companies’ social media efforts. I agree with just about all of it, except not sure about the thought that “the most authentic brands online are the ones that give us real people’s names.” Certainly Ford’s Scotty Monty on Twitter (where he uses his own name) @scottmonty) is a great example (cited in the post). And of course, Zappos’ Tony Hsieh and his staff counts (even if he uses @zappos and other names range from @zappos_fly to @Zappos_Service). But would Skittles Fan page on Facebook be more authentic (or successful) if its CMO or Director of Product Innovation shared his/her name and let everyone know he/she had the reigns? Probably not. That is, unless some Willy Wonka-type character (or Leprechaun) worked there as “Keeper of the Rainbow.” I’m not sure Nike+ (the example in question) gains any authenticity points for being a real person vs. having a real purpose for it – customer service, new features or linking up users and Twitters who are geographically and pace compatible. (Of course it doesn’t have to be one or the other.) No one seems to be dinging at @TOMSshoes for lack of transparency about who’s tweeting from its end. Because humanity is baked into the business (buy one pair, one pair sent to someone in need).

But that’s not to nitpick or twist words. It’s just to build and ultimately get me to a point about how in social media or traditional media: If the goal is to move away from being a faceless corporation—or in more positive terms to be human—, then you should empower your employees to bring to life the personality of the brand. Whether they become faces of the company or not and whether you do it on Twitter or TV, it still about people. And when you encourage/enable them to add their own unique personalities to the mix, that’s when you get something really special – like @JetBlue which updates who is on Twitter duty or one of my all-time favorites, Southwest’s David Holmes:

You go airlines!

If you’re calling or emailing me about a job and you don’t mention the password, “SWEATER!”, then don’t expect me to return your message.

I do not want to seem ungrateful, especially in this tough time. I feel fortunate to have attracted your interest. I appreciate that you (at least a one or two of you) want to understand my needs first – before telling me about the search you’re conducting for “award-winning agency with blue-chip clients.” And I even appreciate that you’re being upfront about “finding me on LinkedIn.”

It’s just that doing a search for planners/strategists on LinkedIn and blanketing us with half-assed “this could be a great opportunity for you…or if not, can your recommend a friend or colleague” messages, is lazy and insincere. Yes, I’m easy to find, and I don’t want to change that – though if you had checked a little farther down the page, I’m not open to being contacted about career opportunities or job inquiries. But I’m also pretty easy to find things out about, including hopefully (for you) a connection to make the introduction. While you weren’t looking at my contact preferences, you also seemed to miss the link to My Blog (that’s here). Admittedly it ain’t the most professional place; yet, you can learn more about me/how I write/what I think about/etc. than on that template page that you didn’t even bother really reading anyway.

Unlike Chris Mortensen, I don’t feel like it’s a privilege to chat with me. However, I do expect some level of working for it. I do expect you to care enough about knowing with whom you’re about to make unsolicited contact to do a little bit of research. Shit, this blog is the first result for a Google search of my name. I do more digging about people I may end up meeting through friends that than you have for a person you’re about to ask to consider making a major life change. Sure, maybe I’m a little weird but that’s just weak sauce.

In case you are wondering, I’m not looking for a new gig. I know, you “don’t care” since it’s about my future career path and potential. Sarcasm aside, I’ve worked with recruiters in the past and had fantastic experiences. I understand this may be a difficult time for you. But I do not believe desperate times call for desperate measures. I even hear what Paul is saying in his recent article in AdAge, “What to Do When a Headhunter Calls,” about recruiters vs. ’senders.’

But in response to his advice (and final sentence), “Answer the phone”…

Sure. Now, what’s the password?

Has anyone else had the distinctly awkward pleasure of witnessing a crowd of people respond to this Louis Vuitton advertisement at the movies?

There are so things I’d like to say this experience, but I’m trying to wrap things up) get out of here for the holidays. Thus, I want to make just one clear point: Sometimes when it makes perfect sense, you really lose. And sometimes when it makes no sense, you really win. And sometimes when it fits exactly or doesn’t fit at all, you actually tie.

Crystal clear?

No. Okay, well, here’s some advice for Louis V and other advertisers out there. Just because you make a cinematic ad (style and message), it doesn’t mean it’s right for the cinema (media). Furthermore, just because you think your target is “sophisticated and upscale,” it doesn’t make people at “more artsy theaters” the appropriate audience for your advertising. In fact, I’m really having trouble thinking of any theater or movie it would “work” for. Going to see a movie is social; it brings people (from diverse backgrounds) together for shared entertainment. (Not to sound like the speech given at every Oscars ceremony) Even someone who is compelled by the “journey” story (or even enjoys its music selection), is not going to do so in a crowd of strangers. Especially at this economically-difficult time, I can’t think of anyone who would self-identify as a fan of that brand.

I have been meaning to write this since seeing Slumdog Millionaire on Saturday night at the Angelika (highly recommended by the way) when after 4 indie previews were followed by the ad embedded above. It was met with an “Are you serious?” moment of silence, followed by a barrage of laughter and conversations (at least in rows near me) about the ridiculousness of LV’s communications. I can’t imagine the reaction would be any different elsewhere, so it’s crazy to think they’ve been running these since at least this May.

In fact, I would argue they actually disrupted my journey into a movie-going mindset (suspending disbelief, being open to being moved, etc.) with this unbelievably silly and self-important move.

Please tell me I’m not alone.

Advertising. While holiday parties are being canceled, scaled back, etc., it reminds me of all the other holiday parties I’ve been to in my 6 years in the biz. Every year some of the geezers (original MadMen) of the industry and even some of the old guys (30-40 year-old’s, that is) talk about parties past. The wild times without worries or inhibitions. The excess. The skinny dipping. The drugs.

No. I don’t want the drugs. But we didn’t get our good ‘ole days or our dot-com boom. People my age came in at the bust, enjoyed a few normal years, and now have to deal with this crazy recession.

So. Realize this: We don’t want to hear about your stinkin’ glory day holiday events. And realize what we’re thinking on the other days when you tell us to pay our dues: “Why? We’re already paying for the mess you’ve made.”

What we’d actually prefer to do is roll up our sleeves and get to solving the problem. What we don’t want to do is roll up our sleeves and do the bullshit work while you get to “take a stab” at solving it.

You taught us this top-down model. AAE to AD eventually. A good idea can come from anywhere in the creative department. You value our understanding of “the digital life” enough to hear our explanation of how we use social networks but not enough to put us in the room with the potential client, to whom you’re selling that understanding.

And not just in the ad industry. You taught my Banking friends that it’s normal to work 90 hours a week, be unhealthy but filthy rich. You taught the Asset Managers to manage relationships, you’ll take care of the investments. You taught my friends in Fashion to sell on shows, showrooms, and parties. You taught those working for Magazines and Newspapers to worry about content, not the medium/delivery mechanism. You taught new Teachers to stick to the curriculum and focus on preparing students for standardized tests if they want tenure. That this is just the way it is; that we should just deal with it. We fell in line and look what happened.

You taught us to respect our elders. We say, “Earn it.”

It’s time for new ways.

[This rant was inspired by this fantastic post by Charles Frith, a responsible "old" guy in advertising (which there are many others including Gen Gifted on right sidebar), who used the word "party" in the title of his post. My title inspired by this.]

This is a response to Clay Parker Jones’ Longing for Something Real.

I was just alerted to Clay’s latest post via Twitter. He sets expectations upfront that it’s introspective, focused on the job of a strategist in the world of communications, and a bit long. I will do the same. This is my initial reaction, also focused on the role of an account planner (another term for strategist), and I have no idea how long it’s going to be.

As I started reading, I found his honesty refreshing and many of themes he touches on relatable—at least to another 27-year-old in the advertising industry. Though I’d imagine much of what he’s offered will be less than foreign to older strategists and anyone looking for professional satisfaction. Anyway, somewhere around his third paragraph, I realized I was going to comment—most likely, “good stuff, brother.” But then when he started tackling his second question—Can strategy be fulfilling?—I started taking notes. (Yes, buddy freehand first – just like your pops taught you.)

I was compelled to write…

You may be surprised (if you haven’t been already) how many people don’t know what to do next, what to do now. Yes, that goes for job searching. However, I’m going talk about marketers. They just aren’t sure what to do for their “brand.” (This is the last time I use the “b” word in this post.) They don’t know what to do say about their companies, its products and/or services. They don’t know how they should be saying it or where. Often, they don’t have know who they should be talking with. A few steps back, they don’t have a clear sense why they want to “communicate” in the first place.

We are problem solvers. And sometimes the most important work we do is helping people (our clients) define the real problem they want to address.

We are storytellers with discipline. And though we don’t create the ads, we can blend strategy and creativity in weaving together a story that’s rooted in a deep understanding of people (our client’s current and/or potential customers) and how we can actually offer value to them.

We, as Denzil Meyers put it, help people find the best way to move forward.

Without us there would be less differentiation, interestingness, and effectiveness. There would probably be less respect for the people many of our clients and co-workers still call “consumers” as if they are waiting around ready to hear about the company’s latest and greatest. Even if now they’re not only sitting on their couches in front of a TV but also at their desks in front of computers, online.

They still need someone to explain the social aspect of communications. Because many have only been broadcasting out for their entire lives as marketers. That worked. It’s all they had to do. They understand the two-way nature of conversations in theory but not necessarily how to practice it. With regards to the respect you brought up and I just mentioned, they are respectful individuals but don’t always practice respectful communications. This respect has to manifest itself online as well as in communications meant for traditional media.

Take the recent Motrin headache. (Yeah, I know hundredth person to go there.) Do you think it matters that it was an online video rather than a TV commercial? Hells no. It’s a piece of communications that showed a lack of understanding of the people they wanted to talk to—moms. To be fair, it’s possible they we’re looking to talk with, or engage, these moms in dialogue. But I’m quite sure this is not the “we get you” takeaway they were hoping for. In short, some moms found the ad to be disrespectful. Yet now they have a community that’s bigger than their yoga class, brunch group, or (insert modern mommy stereotype here), more easily connected, and has a stage to respond. (They weren’t going to buy a TV spot in the past and a strongly worded letter probably would not have made the splash a group of bloggers and Tweeters and YouTubers did.)

Marketers need to understand the expectations of their companies, not just for speed of apology. I feel like it’s more important than ever that they have someone helping them dig down to their essence, truly get to know the people they want to sell to and support, find their voice, and keep them honest while not losing their specialness in communicating with others.

As strategists/planners, this is our job. And while I don’t find it fulfilling every day, on the whole, it’s pretty damn sweet.

Ironically (?) not having written anything on planning in a while has had me feeling less fulfilled. So thank you for putting something out there that made me think and type out more than a half-assed comment.

Also, just so you know, I already consider you a “thinker-doer.” In fact, I have that as a label in G-Mail for convos I have with you, Mike (who you shout-out), Noah, Eric, Chet, Johanna, Amit, Kevin, Leland, Adrian, Paul, and a few others. No joke. I agree I will only be adding more planners and ex-planners to that folder.

And one more thing…Brands! Ah, that felt good.

Right, it wasn’t very creative. Well, the point is the Age of Conversation 2: Why don’t they get it? is available starting today for purchase (in hard-copy or e-book or both) here with all proceeds going to the children’s charity, Variety.

As I posted back a few months ago, I contributed to the Secrets-themed chapter. More specifically, I try to capture the struggle I think a lot of people are having with being at times both a really private person and over-sharer, and thus, the world that has created. For example:
“What are your biggest weaknesses?” the HR director asks. “Oh, I mean besides your inability to strategically choose which pictures you upload to your Facebook profile. Trust me, you’ve proven you’re not too much of a perfectionist.”

If that didn’t whet your appetite for AOC2, there 200+ contributors, who probably did a better job giving you some E & E (education and entertainment):

It’s hard for big companies (and agencies) to compete with the speed of inspired individuals.

While the examples are certainly focused on politically-motivated people, I think the same is pretty much true for most organizations. It’s hard to be nimble. It’s scary to launch and learn. It takes a lot of constant monitoring and hands on responding.

This week has been a solid one for Obama Baton. Just over two weeks since the original idea was had, we’re building momentum and an audience of supporters, many of whom are following on Twitter and joined our Facebook groups for New York and Chicago. We’ve also received some really nice shout-outs.

Yet, when it comes to the spreading of an idea, we can’t even compare to “That One”. Within a day of the second Presidential debate—when McCain referred to Senator Obama using the term in quotes—this site was live and selling “That One” gear. They recognized the meme immediately when they heard it, and now their Facebook page already has over 21,000 fans.

My final example (not to be confused with the final countdown – via @lilmissjen) of a person compelled to create by Barack has got to be Mike Cuffe with The Obama Experiment – via @darrylohrt. And though it may have taken longer than the above creations from idea to execution, he has promoted his work with a video of art speed painting.

Lastly, I want to wish good luck to Kevin, who will be running the Chicago Marathon this Sunday with Obama Baton. Thanks everyone for your support. Please continue to pass it on.

How I feel right now…yes, I’m torn.

Last night when catching up on some industry porn at Agency Spy, I made it to a post entitled, The Best Ad We’ve Seen In Forever. That piqued my interest. Here it is:

My reaction was a mix of “Awesome-I’ve seen this before-Love that Toyota didn’t have to tag it-I’ve seen this before somewhere else not just Nessy spot-Leeroooyyy Jeeennnkins-Awesome.” Yes, I immediately made the connection to this YouTube classic and the comments showed that I wasn’t the only one. But unlike me, they didn’t say awesome; they called it a “complete rip-off.”

Between this and the recent rip-off claims against Sony Bravia’s Bunnies, I have had to take a step back and figure out what I believe in the space of creativity. I don’t think there’s no such thing as an original idea solves it, and I don’t thinking going back to Kindergarten rules (it’s simple, don’t steal!) adds anything to the debate. Nor does it help me understand why I’m annoyed at Sony and not Toyota. In my mind, both are equally obvious in their connection to the original.

Note: I’m not saying blatant in copying but obvious in where they drew inspiration. Thus, I’m basing my case mostly to the source of inspiration and the rights each source has to what they have to what they’ve created (in other words, this isn’t ‘Nam there are rules).

In Sony’s case it’s artists (Kozyndan) who makes their living creating art and has rights to it whereas in Toyota’s case it’s a gamer (Ben Schulz) who recorded some silliness and put it up on YouTube.

However, what I’m realizing as I’m writing is that I’m actually reacting to lying. I don’t really give a shit about the line between being inspired by and stealing. I just don’t believe them (Sony/Fallon/Passion Pictures). If they’d come out and say “we’re created something that drew inspiration from a variety of sources, one of which is Kozy and Dan just like Kozyndan is inspired by things (Hokusai) created by others,” I’d have more respect for them. If Toyota is asked about their new spot above and claim originality, I will be equally as angry.

Ultimately, I think both companies/agencies should be honest and involve inspirer’s from the get-go. If Toyota had reached out to Ben, involved him in the process—creating more, new, better, deeper content as well as links to his viral video—and compensated him fairly for it, they would see a greater ROI for it.

Guess I’m not so torn anymore…just waiting for Toyota to not to lie.

I thought this was a well-known “sport.” But when I showed some people my pics from San Diego recently, they thought I was a perv that randomly snaps shots of teenage boys. So to clarify and educate…

From Wiki:

The art of freestyle walking (loosely related to Free Running) is a means of self-expression and creative interaction with one’s environment. Many of the practitioners of this art form (or sport, as some consider) excelled at the sport by freestyle walking to find more full involvement with their otherwise routine surroundings. Freestyle walkers use leaps and air moves, clever footwork, dance or any non-traditional walking movement. Today, many practitioners view it as the act of rollerblading or skateboarding without the skates or board.

Here is the image referenced above of freestyle walking in action:

I’m not the first to say that running is a great way to get acquainted with a city, especially a new one (and it was my first time in SD). But back to the freestyle walking – in case you want to get schooled, here’s its most prestigous University. See we don’t just game and blog. Such a great example of creative activity or active creativity. Or just living fun. I love this stuff.

Last night – 9/9 at 9PM so you couldn’t forget – MTV put on its annual Video Music Awards. For the first year ever, it took place in Las Vegas at The Palms (home to a great Real World season, and more recently, one of the worst revival ideas they’ve had bringing the same cast back to Sin City). And the only reasons I note the location are (1) Because MTV did so a couple thousand times during their pre-show: “It’s so obvious,” “The perfect place for the VMAs,” “How amazing an idea!” (No, that was not posed as a question – it was not open to debate.) AND (2) Maybe it’s the only legitimate excuse for putting on probably the worst award show production I’ve ever seen (and sadly enough, sat through for a few hours).

Vegas may have been a little too much of a distraction for organizers and artists because from the very start, it can only be described as a trainwreck. (And even if that’s an unoriginal description, I promise you it’s accurate.) I will not spend time talking about the disappointment that was Britney’s performance. Watch it here – before lunch if you’re smart. It really should have been show-stopping.

She was followed up by an awkward Sarah Silverman, of whom I’m a huge fan and who may have been creating this uneasiness as a genius comic device – but other than a few sweet zingers (“if Amy Winehouse isn’t Jewish, someone should tell her face” and “isn’t it so cute how 50 Cent is still alive”) it was really an uncomfortable two minutes (feeling like 10).

Then other than a pretty ridiculous (in a good way) performance by Chris Brown, I don’t really know what happened. And I didn’t black out. The presenters seemed equally confused. Fergie wasn’t there to receive the Best Female award and Shilostache La Buff thought Ludacris was going to come up and accept it for her – which seems insane given the category even if he was responsible for the verse that was responsible for getting anyone to fork over 99 cents for Fergalicious.

Honestly, I really don’t know who won anything other than the guys with eye liner in the Friends and Enemies suite. Timbaland’s really the only dude who has his shit together, so maybe he should be called The Maestro. Peep the Twittering I did last night of some of the most noteworthy occurences. And note, none of them had to do with category winners. Of course, MTV “knows” that people tune in for the celebrity drama, fashion, lifestyle. But maybe it’s time to rethink that because even if setting Britney up for failure was the “buzz-building” idea all along, they may lose their audience (as well as artist support). (Though there’s no substitute for hearing JT say play more damn videos while on stage with The Hills girls.)

Kanye’s complaining of course that he didn’t win anything or get to perform on the main stage, but he really should be happy he didn’t have any part in the “main” production. The suite shows were the only source of originality and slightly interesting and lively musical excitement. Now I can focus my attention on a truely intelligent marketing scheme…Kanye vs. 50, and tomorrow’s release of both their albums. A rivalry which hopefully won’t get violent like this one, which I’m calling Rocklee 2.

Back at Fallon, I wrote a post about how my understanding of Pharrell’s authenticity was called into question.

I concluded with the point that though I’d started replacing “Authentic” with “Transparent” (when it came to how a company should behave), it was less of a choice and more of an imperative.

A few weeks ago I was reminded of this fact—that you can’t hide the truth—when I read this story about one of my favorite shows, Man Vs. Wild. Long story short, Bear Grylls, who had become a relative hero to me and my crew by surviving/making his way out of isolated/ treacherous environments/situations (lots of slash-ies like Fabio), was discovered to be staying at hotels, getting help and consultation, etc. Basically, he was not doing what the show claimed he was.

You can get a sense from this video which I stumbled upon this weekend (forgot where).
There’s no denying Bear’s still a badass, but I have not watched an episode since. He lost my trust and even though the show promises to be “completely 100% transparent” from now on (and to go back and edit past episodes based on the truth), I will be turning my attention to (or DVR to record) Survivorman or Iron Chef or some other show like The Hills, which hasn’t lost my trust. Strangely, this happening has not negatively affected my view(ership) of the Discovery Channel.

But either way, remember: In this transparent world, you may only get one shot at honesty.

Not to be confused with Wet or Sticky Bandits. The beat out Tim, I mean Tommy Duncan and his Be-ance by the narrowest margin in Today-Show-throws-a-Wedding-history by 500 votes!

Go here and click on “Song and Dance! Wedding couples perform” to watch the final four talent competition. (No, NBC doesn’t understand the concept of letting people easily share their content.) Please wait until the end for Cody’s suspect musicial performance and Jessica’s talent of nodding, smiling, and lip syncing the words being sung to her.

How is it that Ticketmaster can let me know my $60 Beastie Boys tickets have been confirmed as purchased, printed, and sent (all as separate updates), but my moving company can’t give me an update on all of my stuff? Thousands of dollars of items somewhere in Minneapolis (or New York) and thousands of dollars being paid to move them and I can’t get anyone to call me back to give me an update on the status. When I finally do get in touch they give me an extended timeframe. No, not the cable company sometime between 9am and 2pm on Wednesday timeframe; the sometime between June 28th and July 4th timeframe. Problem is, they didn’t even make that. “It’s a busy week, so the best we can do is deliver it Friday (July 6th).” So I’ve been paying rent on an empty place since July 1st, now have to take a day off in my first month of working, and still don’t have my tennis racquets, wine glasses, or Eternal Sunshine of a Spotless Mind DVD (nor my DVD player). Thanks Liberty, Mohawk, United Van Lines and all the other companies you’ve swallowed up to make this move a more difficult, costly, and a generally unpleasant experience.

P.S. Please call me back if know an hourly timeframe for Friday.

Drinking game innovation. Whether you call it beer pong or beirut in its original form, the game has changed. Not with catching rules or rebutals, but speed. Civil War is essentially speed beirut, as teams compete to shoot and hit all their opponents cups as soon as they balls come to their side.
5. Stop calling us the Entitlement generation. And if you continue, at least give us props for giving back. Peep this do goodery stat from BC – 650 of less than 3000 grads forewent beach spring breaks for community service!

So now that I’m back in the game, I guess I can go back to being part of the majority. Though I don’t know the stats on blog resurrection, I do have to believe that I’m part of a smaller group of “fighters” who believe it’s better late than never. Kind of like the Dwayne Wade commercial for Converse, except that I’ve only fallen once and it took about 2 months to get up rather than 2 seconds. (In my defense, the lapse period included St. Patty’s Day and a sprained ankle… unrelated incidents.) Anyway, I’m back (I think) and reporting live on – wait, what was my original vision/dream for this site… something about my life in Minneapolis. I’ve gotta change the heading, ’cause these next facts have nothing to do with the Salvador slogan.

Other interesting facts about blogs:

The blogosphere is doubling in size every 6 months

It is now over 60 times bigger than it was 3 years ago

On average, a new weblog is created every second of every day

Technorati tracks about 1.2 Million new blog posts each day, about 50,000 per hour

Weather in Minneapolis: Clear skies, 65 and sunny.

Was Blink 182 traveling on business trips when they wrote this song? Or were they getting tattoos and piercings? Well, either way, Megan was a huge fan of this number, and it leads me to my big question of this late evening: Why do I continue to tell people that I’m 25 when asked “how old are you?” in any work environment? Does this extra 9 and a half months make me more legit? Does the big two-five make mean that now I’ve graduated into adulthood? Those 23 and 24 year old young professionals living the crazy life don’t know about responsibility – paying the bills, feeding the kids. Honestly, I get the same reaction every single time – surprised look, asking really? To which I turn slightly red, do an awkward 4-5 abbreviated nods, and contemplate asking how ancient they are. Instead I break the more awkward silence and inquire, “Why, how old did you think I was?” And the answer is always the same, so always as unsurprising, yet just as confounding – “25, 26 or so.” Then why do you look so astonished!?! So, now the real question: Why do I lie? If I said 24, I’d get the same thing. So why do I put myself in the position to get caught? I’ve asked myself this before, but now that I’ve written it down, it really makes no sense. Okay, I’ll stop. Though, if Kiran asks me if I have Missy Elliot’s first CD, I’ll continue saying I bought it and lost it. (Pointless inside joke since he doesn’t even know I have this blog. I haven’t told him since he’s been living on a tropical island for the past 2 years so wouldn’t be as impressed with my pictures of beaches. Talk about doing med school right!) If you work with me, then here it goes: I’m 24. If you’ve never asked, thanks, and now you know the truth. If you have, you shouldn’t be reading this. Back to the rant…

The real real questions are why do these people feel comfortable asking me that and why don’t I ask them right back? I guess the new response could be, “Not old enough to be asking you your age.” Or maybe, “Old enough not to be your son… unless of course you had some crazy high school years.” This would preempt the even worse, but thankfully very rare response to the question I haven’t asked, “I’m old enough to be your mother.” No, men don’t answer that. But yes, they do ask the question about 1/3 as often. Their response: The closed-mouth half-smile/smirk abbreviated-nod that says, “I remember that age. Life was good.” Then I open my computer and show them pictures of Rio, cornrows and co-ed flip cup.
