Yesterday afternoon I saw a tweet from ESPN RISE asked if anyone had questions for Donald Faison of Dr. Turk on Scrubs fame. I posed: Best hairstyle in sports? Look at Lawrence’s head.
Greetings, Kind Sirs,

Have you ever blacked out on Irish Car Bombs? Been thrown out of a bar before the sun went down? Watched yourself get visibly fatter while taking down two Double Quarter Pounders at McDonald’s? Gotten scolded by a stewardess for being an intoxicated loudmouth? Indulged too heavily on a soiree’s delicious finger food and subsequently nuked the bathroom? Tried to drunkenly save face with a girl that rejected you by saying, “I don’t need any new friends?” Been too drunk and too broke to pay for your cab? Argued with your bank because surely they have your balance wrong? Spent the morning watching after-school HIV prevention films at a free AIDS clinic? Had your girlfriend’s niece ask you why your stomach is so much bigger than everyone else’s at a family function? Have you ever recounted one or all of these stories in lurid detail to your buddies over Instant Messenger?

If you answered “yes” or better yet “indeed,” then, you, sir, are a gentleman, and we, the dastardly webmasters at TheFoggyMonocle would like to salute you.

Interview with one of the founders (the one on your right) to come soon…now.

3:18 PM me: could i email you 3-5 questions about it
interview style – and i’ll post the answers
3:19 PM James: yeah totally
or we could do it as an IM interview to fit in with the theme
3:20 PM me: nice idea…how did you decide to create this site?
James: we always talked about having a blog together and the gentleman joke is recurring for us whenever we behave badly and i had a backlog of all these funny IMs/Emails recounting bad behavior
so i figured my friends would too
i hope it catches on
3:22 PM me: how did you decide to call it “the foggy monocle”?
3:24 PM James: All gentleman require a monocle — it’s old-timey and it also aids your eagle eye in spotting various opportunities. After a long night out full of much drinking and carrying on it often gets foggy, and so you IM and your email your buddies to get the full story on what went down the previous evening and hence de-fog (is that word?) your monocle.
3:26 PM me: if it’s not it can be soon. what must a gentleman never do?
and the converse, from what must he never abstain?
3:29 PM James: A gentleman never second guesses his decisions. He lives in the moment and goes head in to any situation, no matter how big of a dumbass he’ll inevitably make of himself or how much he’ll hurt in the morning.
3:32 PM me: where is the best place to get a monocle?
3:33 PM James: The monocle store. But be warned, lines are often long, so if you have an engagement planned with a lady, you might want to stop by well in advance so as not to arrive tardy.
3:36 PM me: ha. i had no idea how you’d respond. good stuff. and one final question: any night-spot recommendations for the monocle-wearing gentleman in nyc?
3:38 PM James: discussing with Dane
3:44 PM Erik: A gentleman will adapt to his surroundings and become comfortable wherever he is, given that there is appropriate amounts of liquor and women on the premises. Be it a club or a dive bar. Occasionally though, the best company is found in the later. But the most important part of the equation is the liquor. A true gentleman must first have half a dozen shooters before talking to a lady.

The end. Now go visit.

He’s a dude I’ve talked about before (and thanked) as the founder of Fallon’s planning blog (he is AKI SYSTEMS 2600), a web-maven (who put me onto netvibes and many a YouTube video), a mentor and friend in MN (and still). So of course I was planning on interviewing him at some point in the future but when I realized it was already Wednesday (that 3-day weekend fooled me)—and another week was in danger of passing without featuring someone who has personally inspired me to stop talking about it and be about it—I hollered at Aki. And unsurprisingly, I found him doing something new.

I caught him on his Yahoo! Live Channel (which I encourage you to check out), and I got him chatting for 40 minutes (as you can see by the time-stamps below). Unfortunately there’s no way record a video conversation, so we kicked it old school and IMed with our live images up on screen. As you’ll see, he didn’t even need my “questions” (I’m still learning how to interview); rather, he just riffed some great stuff off the dome. And I’ve got it here for you to feast on…

What’s your philosophy when it comes to doing?
[ 4:30] akispicer I’ll quote yoda: “Do. Or do not. There is no try.”
[ 4:30] akispicer Can’t think this stuff to paralysis.
[ 4:31] akispicer Fast to beta…stick and move. And honestly, I dunno if the agency/client pace can afford that kind of speed.

What’s on the web have you been interested in lately?
[ 4:32] akispicer Lately? It can shift every week, I have a short attention span with web toys.
[ 4:32] akispicer This for sure. (POST INTERVIEW INSERT: HE’S TALKING ABOUT YAHOO! LIVE.)
[ 4:32] akispicer I’ve noted that we spent some thousands on a vid conference room here…
[ 4:33] akispicer Noone knows how to turn the damn room on.
[ 4:33] akispicer And suddenly all that is felled by democratic technologies like this.
[ 4:33] akispicer No software…no learning curve…no equipment…no manual.
[ 4:34] akispicer Just click and things work right out of the box.
[ 4:36] akispicer Other than this tech…Slideshare…
[ 4:36] akispicer I like how Slideshare is pooling thinking…
[ 4:37] akispicer I am using Slideshare like a Google…looking up topics and seeing how other people are thinking and
[ 4:37] akispicer responding to the same topic.

What have you been doing outside of Fallon?
[ 4:37] akispicer Outside Fallon…Planning For Good.
[ 4:37] akispicer 1500 of the brightest minds in advertising want to collaborate with good causes and make a difference.
[ 4:38] akispicer Ed Cotton has been taking the lead…others of us chip in
[ 4:38] akispicer I am trying to harness the same model for local solutions.
[ 4:39] akispicer We’ve been learning alot about actually DOING what we push in all our decks to clients.

How do you not get overwhelmed by all the new online technologies (“toys”)?
[ 4:45] akispicer It can take a long minute to check emails, check RSS feeds, click on “time waster” links I get IM’d…

How do you make that minute matter (everything you put into del.icio.us, and on the blog, and that you read)?
[ 4:46] akispicer I definitely notice my attention span shortening…but I try to provide value to clients and others thru
[ 4:46] akispicer client blog posting, trends presentations, and day-to-day strategy decks
[ 4:47] akispicer The time suck pays back when you have to deliver an answer to a complex problem and you have all the refs
[ 4:47] akispicer ready.
[ 4:47] akispicer More of my time is being spent with FILING AND LIBRARY RECALL SYSTEMS
[ 4:47] akispicer tagging, using consistent names and redistributing info to parties that could use it
[ 4:48] akispicer Facebook and blogs serve as a broadcast system so that I don’t have to find the people in my networks, I just
[ 4:48] akispicer have to order and organize for their digestion. Its all about connecting the dots for others.
[ 4:49] akispicer My main issue with newspapers, magazines and TV is that I cannot tag and file and forward insightful info.

How does all this impact your role as a planner (POST INTERVIEW INSERT: Planning Director)?
[ 4:50] akispicer I see my role here and with clients as a reporter, or guide.
[ 4:51] akispicer I like immersing myself into these nets and coming back to “report”
[ 4:51] akispicer Clients and agencies are intimidated by these technologies…and often, they just need a Virgil to guide them
[ 4:52] akispicer I like the process of experimentation and synthesis – simplifying it into language that is universal, really.

So everyone gets up to speed and things don’t get lost in translation (like from acct to creative or marketing to operations)?
[ 4:57] akispicer Well, I think social computing holds the potential to get back to communicating, actually.
[ 4:57] akispicer Take today with Y! Live…the designer hit me up on my channel and we chatted.
[ 4:58] akispicer He answered my questions, he asked me a few.
[ 4:58] akispicer When is the last time the head of a major brand “communicated” directly with a customer/user/prospect/person?
[ 4:59] akispicer Social computing FORCES brands and creators to get out here and talk. It is forcing politicians to do the same
[ 5:00] akispicer It is forcing agencies to learn a new approach…
[ 5:00] akispicer Yeah, I think you and I and many others are digital natives so it is not so awkward to imagine getting on our
[ 5:01] akispicer websites and blogs and talking back. Or risking questions from open web.

Risking?
[ 5:02] akispicer We are a bit more improvisational and free form…that is considered a “risk” by most clientele and brands and
[ 5:02] akispicer politicians.
[ 5:03] akispicer Most brands could never do what Y! Live just did, which is open up the windows and let me and you peek behind
[ 5:03] akispicer the curtain and just hold a one-to-one conversation.
[ 5:03] akispicer And that simple tactic makes me a believer and evangelist…

What other brands are bringing people in like this?
[ 5:05] akispicer Much of the innovation is happening out here, amongst people, not necessarily among the big brands.
[ 5:06] akispicer I liked Virgin America’s recent appeal to the masses to get the DOT to greenlight VA to fly.

And what about Brainfood? That seems like an example of you putting it (all) out there for people (including the competition) to see.
[ 5:10] akispicer I have a fundamental issue with hiding information.
[ 5:11] akispicer We all do so much research and info gathering…only to present to 6 people and store/hide the insights away.
[ 5:11] akispicer Brainfood is really about making what we do open and present before the whole agency.
[ 5:12] akispicer Its also about getting creativity and ideas out of the ghetto of “creative departments”.
[ 5:12] akispicer Everyone at the agency contributes. Everyone is important. Let’s share ideas together. And eat free lunch, too
[ 5:13] akispicer I have found that agencies are packed with pockets of innovators in the interactive basements, in the
[ 5:13] akispicer coordinator desks, in the production offices.
[ 5:14] akispicer And these pockets of energy and passion and insight often go untapped
[ 5:15] akispicer So I view my role as trying to source and direct these pockets to make sparks happen.

Hopefully you all will agree, this seemed like a perfect way to end. Thanks Aki. See you soon…without any travel!

I could not think of a better way to kick off the “Do Day” profile series than with an interview with Jen Giroux. Running has been top of mind recently for me with recent resolutions (“run more” – I keep ‘em pretty simple) and the purchase of my Nike +. But more than that device or even looking at pictures of my marathon-ready self from September 2006, Jen provides the motivation I need to get out there and run! I love receiving her update emails, and upon receipt of the last I asked if I could feature her here. Thankfully she agreed and the rest, as they say, is below…

In July of 2006, Jen decided to run a marathon in memory of her friend, Steven Bouvier (Bouv), who was lost to lymphoma in 2005 at the age of 29. She had never run more than “maybe three miles…with walk breaks,” let alone a marathon. But on January 14, 2007, she ran her first marathon and raised OVER $10,000 for The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society with Team In Training to help fight against blood cancers.

She didn’t stop there. In June 2007, she ran her second marathon in San Diego, mentoring others and helping in their fundraising efforts. And Jen is now training for her third marathon…in Paris! Oui, it’s true. She once again has ambitious goals: 1. to raise $20,000 and 2. to cut 20 minutes off her time. If anyone can do it, Jen can—and that’s why I had to ask her a few questions.

But before I get into that, I urge you to take a look at her running blog, which gives an inside (and fun) look at her past and present training/fund raising, and if you feel compelled, DONATE.

(Note: Rather than “bold” the questions, I used it to highlight some points that I found particularly interesting/insightful. Let me know if you’re not feeling that move. And also, since this is my first time doing one of these blog interviews you may find the questions random or lame or something else not good. Feel free to leave a constructive criticism in the comments as well. It’s a learning process, and thanks Jen for bearing with me!) Okay, now here we go.

So for me, it ended up being really easy because as soon as I searched the LLS + charity events, I learned about Team in Training. I signed up for an info session intending to participate in a bike ride, and by the end of the session I found myself signing up for a marathon. I remember my friend asking “Aren’t you even going to think about it?” and I answered “If I think about it, I’m going to talk myself out of it” and passed in my paperwork. Thus the running & fundraising madness began.

—Where is your favorite place to run in NYC?
The upper loop of central park in the evening.

—What is the most surprising thing that happened since you’ve been running for a cause?
I think the overwhelming support of both people I know and complete strangers. I would say am not an overly or overtly emotional person, but I would often find myself misty-eyed over a lot of the emails I would get back from people.

Also the impact of a lot of people doing a little – of the $10,000 or so I raised, there were no donations over $200. That was really special to me – how many people had taken the time and effort to be involved.

Finally, that I’m now running my third marathon. I used to hate running and now, well, it still doesn’t come easy, but its something I really enjoy. Oops, that’s three things, isn’t it.

—Totally fine. What’s the song that keeps you going (during running and/or off)?
Sunday Bloody Sunday. It makes me think of bigger things than how much my feet/legs hurt.

—How do you find the time to train, fund raise, do it all?
Honestly, sometimes I’m not sure. I think you have to make the time for things that mean a lot to you, especially living in NYC where there’s always a million things to do. I try to do my solo runs in the morning because that’s really the only way that I can truly assure they get done. Fundraising and blogging happens after hours since I’m a bit of a night owl. I actually do a lot of the thinking about what’s going to be in my emails and other ideas while I’m running. I probably pay the biggest price in sleep.

—How did you decide on this years fund raising goal? Last year’s?
Last year I initially was only going for five. After my first letter I think I raised almost $3,000 and I decided, what the hell, I’ve got 6 more months, let’s go for double digits. As far as this year, I kind of just pulled it out of the air. I probably would have been more prudent sticking with the same or maybe going for $15,000, but I don’t feel like I have anything to lose by aiming high (except for maybe a little blow to my ego). This year is going to be more challenging because people know that I can actually run a marathon so I think that effects the fundraising. But, I’m planning on some other things – more outreach to my hometown local organizations, a few events, and a more organized E-bay bum auction.

—What is the key to maintaining momentum?
Setting up a plan/calendar for whatever you’re doing helps immensely. I send updates roughly every 3-4 weeks or around training and fundraising milestones like big races. If you give yourself little deadlines, it makes it less likely that you’ll find yourself waiting until the last minute.

Also, I really really try to keep my blog enjoyable/fun to read, and not completely focused on “give me your money!” (although that is of course is the end goal). Most of the people I’m writing to are probably never going to run a marathon or similar so I really try to write about things that are inspiring, exciting, frustrating – a genuine account of my experience doing this. Then I hope that people find the stories interesting. I think when that happens, people are more than happy to contribute.

—What do you credit most for your success?
There’s a lot of little things – a self-depreciating sense of humor, a broad email list full of good people, a great charity all have something to do with it. But I’d give the most credit to doing something I’m very passionate about and really believe in. Even though all this began because of something of very sad and painful, the “ripple effect” of good things and how many people have been touched as a result…all the people donating, and reading the blog, helping other people fund raise, makes me very proud. Being the catalyst for all that was something I could personally could do to (for lack of a better term) honor our friendship and helped me deal with Bouv’s death in the best possible way I could.

And where ever he is, I’m sure he gets a good laugh at the sight of me out running every Saturday morning. I usually do.

—Can’t follow that up with anything except, thanks so much Jen!
